However, these students still deserve credit for creativity. I have
seen some of these before but some are new so it is great to see

How will you know when you get there?
Especially those who are blinded thinking infinite wealth is the end
goal in life.
For what?
Some may have heard of the story of the mexican fisherman and the
tourist. Go ask Google Tan if you need to. It is a simple story but it
reminds us of the purpose of living.
One may be happier planning a whole life's work to attain a certain
goal but when you reach there, you barely realised that your life has
just gone by and all the wealth you have worked for isn't going to buy
you back the time lost. So will that make you happy now? Seriously?
How different is that from selling your soul to the devil?
We ought to live life with a purpose, don't waste it and regret not
having one in the end.
Set goals and work towards them and not wait for goals to be churned
out. For then it will be too late.
It is time to stop and ponder.
Lord of the rings
weird but happy feeling. I am surprised his Dad could still remember
me and how I first knew Roy during martial arts when we were 9. My job
was pretty simple, once the cute little page boy walks down the aisle
in front of the bride, I will take the pillow of rings from them and
guard it till the couple needs it. i.e. I will the be "lord of the
rings". It is corny but I just have to give myself that title for that
morning. After that it is more of a 'calefare' job.
Roy seems bent to try something stupid during the March in the dinner
entrance and Youtube has been giving him too many weird ideas. Hans
and Andrew, be prepared to dance. Don't think I will be spared either.

155km
out how to clear some space and found some interesting stats.
I have ran 155km since January. I am in deficit by 18km based on my
goal but I think it was an achievement compared to last year.

Even the router has gotta be a mac now
people asked me about other mac products, for example wireless
routers, I will advise them to go for Linksys ones since they are much
cheaper than Apple's airport extreme. I have been using linksys
routers for years and upgraded to a wireless N router last year. Can't
really go wrong with Linksys since they are the industry leader in
network products.
Adding to my list of life dramas last week, my router was one of them.
I was managing a few sites and had difficulty loading them. I thought
it was a maintenance issue with Starhub cable but the problem
persisted over a few days. My iPhone could load the sites well on its
3G connection. So it has to be either my Mac, Router or Cable Modem. I
connected my mac to my iPhone via internet tethering and the site
loaded immediately! WTH, that means I have been piling up my workload
these few days for nothing.
Then I tried to connect my cable modem directly to my mac and it was
working fine to. i.e. The only thing left was the router. Went through
2 support sessions with Linksys, flashed firmware, reset settings and
all. Spent a good number of hours on it but the problem remained.
It is really quite retarded when surfing other websites are fine. Only
those sites hosted by my webhost. Even when I tried to load my
webhost's site, it can only load text but not the images. It is
bizarre and I can't explain this. Maybe even the tech support at
Linksys would think that I am some IT idiot when I tried to explain
the issue to them. Below are screenshots of the sites only loading the
text and not the images. If there were problems with my webhost
server, I would not be able to load their site and text all all.
Had enough, bought an Airport Extreme and it is all good now, plus it
is even faster. It is a premium to pay ($268 vs $140) but it resolves
my problem.

It was cold and drizzling.
the plastic lid of his dinner takeaway. I found the box filled with
some dimes. Most of the time, I would be having my meals alone like
him and I can relate a little to him. I am no saint but a little help
I could offer made me a little happier.
Just give.

The closure
That has to be it. I need an outlet. This topic of a new hobby was already discussed before over a few dinners and the conclusion was to pursue my dino newspaper sculpting hobby but that is different. It can't replace my riding sessions. Riding has been my tested and proven form of 'outlet' for the past decade and I have relied on it for far too long. It helped brought peace and balance into my life. Yo-yo was part of it but it has fallen out of the equation after it became my business. A good amount of time in a day was spent on Spinworkx related matters so it is just tiring to be practicing yo-yos at night. Unlike riding, the thrills, fear, falls, blood, satisfaction and all. It is hard to find something to replace that aspect of my life.
What if I go out for easy rides? That might be a feasible option initially but since my hospital retreat and after my last doctor check out. I had to take the drastic measure of stopping it. Every time I think of riding again, the image of my spine's MRI scan comes into my mind. I didn't update my blog about my last doctor's visit after I was discharged. I thought only my last disc was degenerated (worn out) but after the follow up check up, my scan showed the 2nd last disc was worn out as well. If I don't take care of my spine, the next disc will be strained as well. How to ride? I rode hard for so many years, broke a fair amount of bike parts. Imagine the amount of stress the hard landings and crashes my bike was subjected to. I overlooked the fact that my body was part of this whole thing too. Now that I am older, it is payback time.
My morning runs are not to be confused with this hobby 'outlet'. I jog because it is a requisite for one of my business. I do love it, only during the last 50 metres to the end point. It is just not a hobby where I can thoroughly screw the free world and enjoy the entire session of it.
Diving was the planned successor to my riding life but looking at my schedule, it may not be feasible.
The reds didn't help much last night except it gave me a good night's sleep but the 2 riders riding across the road gave me closure.
//
Friends were confused by my recent post about my personal life. If anything is affecting me, it is definitely not related to my ex. They thought it had to do with her after the recent anonymous tagged comment about her. Hearing about her recent developments, I am thankful that we went our own ways. So often, we think we know who we are and what we want but everything evolves so rapidly we can hardly keep up and keep track. Then we stop and re-evaluate everything again and continue with the chase.
The MRT should have a new campaign.
handicapped should be allowed to seat. Doesn't make sense for the
males to be sitting down and stone then the ladies will be standing
with their bags of all shapes and sizes.
I am guilty as charged for many occasions but I was honestly clearing
work on my laptop if I take a seat.
I noticed the recent campaign using Phua chu kang has improved the
situation but even with that, we are barely just keeping up with other
countries like Taiwan. We could take a step further.

Things were really great.
There was a time when every song on my iPod selected at random would
somehow be related to someone. There will be lyrical lines that meant
something. Every 2.4 was meaningful. Every run generated ideas to make
you smile. I still have a bagful left. Everyday was 9 and a half and
you made up the remaining half. You introduced the idea of balance.
Without it, I only have one thing happy left to do, work.
Someone asked if I was ok. Without hesitation, I replied I was great.
Why was I asked about that? I thought about it again before I slept. I
think I am really fine. Looking back, maybe I was in delusion.
Clocking 12/7 a week (conservatively) of just work, already excluding
meal times. That explains the tweet like blog posts. Even this post
was entered from the train ride just to escape from my never ending
emails. If those work were not from jobs of passion, I would have
lost my sanity by now but I believe in the greater good.
People who knew me thought the other will be the one. Too bad, it was
far from reality. I am glad at least those from tier 0 saw that so
hope is not all lost.
There are others who actually still understand me. I still think I am
fine and almost great. Just need some red this weekend.
P.s. Had to finish this post in the cab.

Why guys with big thighs can't wear skinny jeans.
When I started my healthy lifestyle regime as one of 2009's new year resolution, I bought the Polar HRM, revamped my timetable, etc. It was tough to adapt but it was worthwhile. Some of the main reasons to run:
1. It was a self business decision for me.
2. So I can maintain shape and still whack hawker food (moderately)
3. Stay healthy
4. So I don't outgrow my clothes and waste money on buying new ones.
Here is the problem. As far as I can remember since NTU days, my weight has always hovered around 76 - 79kg. 79kg would be near the exam period where I just kept eating and eating, finding excuse to take a break at the canteen. Few weeks ago, I am surprised that I am now hovering around 74kg which was quite a record. Now my regular straight fit jeans which used to fit quite well are too big and it looks sloppy. About time to get new ones. Of all clothes, I hated buying jeans the most because of the huge variety of cutting, following by the different colours and all. Too much decisions to overcome to settle on a new pair. Talked to friends and decided on Uniqlo's slim fit jeans. Suddenly I feel so hype buying stuff from there! Almost all the guys living as far as the west side have already been to Uniqlo at Tampines 1 several times! I just live in Pasir Ris and my first time to that new mall was on Monday. My first trip there was just to recce and pick up a few basic stuff.
Went to try on the jeans yesterday. Hans asked me to try the skinny fit jeans just for the fun of it. I could immediately picture myself looking like KFC. From the photo, it was quite obvious that I had difficulty squeezing into the jeans. The 2nd photo shows I meant when I say I look like KFC.
It was a milestone yesterday for me to buy a size 32 jeans. The last time I remember buying anything size 32 was in secondary school. After that it was the baggy jeans era where the correct size to buy was if I can just pull the jeans off without unbuttoning or unzipping. That was about size 36-38. Then in 2007, I transited to regular straight fit jeans. Now with the success of my "act health" campaign, I am in slim fit. This is as far as I can go and I am happy with it. Anything slimmer will make me look like what I call "ostrich legs".

Dimi!
You think we won't recognize you with longer hair and a goatee? =p
little since yesterday after a destructive glass of orange juice and
some honey snack (sa ket ma) for breakfast. This morning, my body was
aching all over when I woke up and I still went for my morning jog.
Came back to do my usual routine, straits times, emails then I was
feeling worse. Suspected that it could be flu, took 2 flu tablets and
went back to sleep.
Was out today for a meeting and some shopping therapy. Procrastinated
buying fitting jeans long enough. Talk about that another time. Just
took 2 more tablets and need to get as much rest as possible. Was
still boasting to Yosh that this is the first time that I did not
catch the flu and many others did. Should have shut my mouth.
Tomorrow morning should be better!

iPhone still so hype?
launch of iPhone 3Gs last weekend. I have passed the age of going to
queue for such stuff.
Went to SIngtel Comcentre to get the 3Gs. I can't believe that it is
out of stock!!! I can only make a pre-order and wait till they notify
me the arrival of new stocks. I have heard my fare share of all the
negative comments about the iPhone and its features so I did not
expect there is still such a huge demand for it. Not to forget those
biased reviews in Digital Life (Straits Times). When Hakim told me he
went to queue for it on Friday evening, it was from 6pm to 1am! I am
quite impressed.
Many are now enjoying all the hype-ness of a new iPhone or product
launch from Apple. Good for all. Maybe more can understand how I felt
every year during a new product launch when I switched to macs in
1999. Exactly a decade ago. Ok I admit, back then, it wasn't as hype
as now. The iPod revolution has not started back then.
Btw, for those iPhone users on PC platforms. If you think the iPhone
has revolutionize your mobile experience, just imagine what a mac can
do to your life. Be enriched - MacEnrich.
Right..I was just trying to be corny. =p

Photos were in last week but I was too busy so took a while to try post process the photos. The UW camera belong to Angie, one of the divers in our group. It was a Canon powershot 720IS which was one of the highly rated cameras on land few years back. I was anticipating how will it perform underwater. The photos below were after processing using Aperture and I have done as much as I could. I can use photoshop for more controls but it will not be worth my time to do it. This is the also the first photo project that I had to do so much colour correction. After this time, I know that an UW point and shoot camera is just now for me. Rather bite the bullet and get the dslr setup.
For that weekend dive, I joined Steph's cousin's (Roy) trip. I learnt that he is a hardcore diver himself so much so that he and his friends registered their own dive operation to organize trips. So it is more for themselves and friends than to do massive groups of divers. This is also my 3rd different dive operator that I joined for Tioman dives. I used to think that better to stick to the dive center you are comfortable with but now I think there is no harm trying others. At least you get to compare which gives more value.
Our resort was at Tekek Village in Tioman, also near the airport. It was my first time here and I was quite impressed. It reminded me a little of my Ko Tao trip in Thailand. As this is near the airport, everything including the alcohol is tax free. Imagine a small bottle of hoegarden going for RM 6.
We were at Tioman Reef Divers for that weekend and I had the most welfare dives of all! For the first time, I never had to carry or change tanks between dives. The small boat took out out to the sites, gear up, enter the water, surfaced and slacked. There will be guys from the dive shop who would help us change the tanks. Usually instead of that scenario, I would be in bigger dive boats, cramping with maybe 20 divers trying to change tanks and gear up while the boat will be rocking with the currents. There are pros and cons though. The bigger boat will be able to visit further dive sites.
Out of the 5 dives, I've been to all except for Labas. It was totally new to me and when we arrived, it looked like huge rock formations above sea level, nothing exciting. Down below, it was a whole new story. It was amazing. Swim through tunnels, walls, fans and all. I never expected such sights in Tioman.
I was a little disappointed at first when I couldn't a single turtle despite the same time and dive site when I saw 4 of them few weeks ago but when we saw a huge moray eel, that made up for it. It looks small in the photo but it was really quite big in life. I can't imagine what happens if you attempt to put your hand near it.
Another surprise sight was a cuttlefish! Honestly I am not sure if the cuttlefish we have in the market is of the same species that I saw. I hope not otherwise I don't think I will eat cuttlefish ever again. I saw one in Thailand but it took off so quickly that I could barely look at it. This one, it didn't panic and was actually hanging around. It feels like we were at that spot for quite some time, admiring it. It looked so ugly yet so beautiful. It is ironic. That moment was definitely rarer than spotting a turtle. This is one of the highlights of diving, coming across really wild weird looking creatures. Yes, we can actually just visit Underwater World and see them all but coming across them by chance makes one feel lucky.
Another cool dive was at Soyak Wreck. I can't recall if I have been there before, maybe not. It was a deeper dive and the boat was in a total wreck. It didn't look interesting at first, visibility was poor until we saw a full body moray eel lying on the deck. In the morning, we were still discussing about the huge moray eel we saw the day before, wondering how long is its full body when it is out of its reef. Now we actually see one for ourself! It looked quite sick, maybe a h1n1 infected nemo swam by and sneezed at it. =p I was so crazy about it that I got really close. Our dive guide stroked it and took a photo with it. The eel looked sick enough and I stroked it too. That is probably the closest one can ever get to an eel. Suddenly my buoyancy control became so good that I hovered so close to it. When we were leaving, I noticed there were sea urchins just below me! My goodness, I was in my lazy outfit, just a rash guard and surf shorts, totally not well protected at all. If I were to be pricked by the urchins, it is going to be another drama mama weekend for me...
My back was quite tame for the trip. Entering the water with a back entry reduces strain from walking around the boat when geared up. And after surfacing from dives, I would remove my gear first before climbing up the ladder to the boat. My buoyancy control has also improved and I could do with only 2 weights now. Less weights also reduces back strain.
Besides all the great dives, the food was perfect. Every meal was like a feast! Roy organised for us cze char style. At other resorts, it will usually be a buffet with average but decent food.
After this trip, got to learn a few stuff about my BCD and I have made further adjustments to it. Can't wait to dive again with it.
Btw, this time I remembered to bring my Freehand Zero down underwater! It is not possible to throw a yoyo in the water, however it is a great place if you want to figure out string or picture tricks with water supporting the strings. Will remember to take pictures the next time round.

now 20mm?

As much as I love my recent 50mm lense but it can get too restrictive sometimes for my style of shooting. The official canon lens site isn't helping much with a long list of the different lens. I do know that I need something less than 50mm. There is 14mm, 15mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, etc. How the hell am I suppose to know which one? Buying the wrong one is not a fun thing to do and I don't like wasting time experimenting which is more suitable.
So I referred to some statistics to help justify my next purchase decision. First I tried to select some of my favourite photos by random and looking at the focal length settings. Then I thought some something even more brilliant! In Aperture (Apple's pro photo management software), there is a list view and I could see the main exif data for my photos. Created a smart album to filter my library and only show photos rated more than 3 stars and taken since 2008. There were 769 photos. Then added another criteria to the filter showing 20mm or less. Even I was quite surprised that most of my shots were taken at the widest angle, i.e. 18mm. In fact, 438 images were taken at 20mm or less. That makes 57% of my photos. Out of the 769 shots, 34 were taken with my 50mm prime. Given a choice, I am quite sure most of this will be also shot at a wider angle.
Hence, I can narrow my choices down to the EF 20mm f2.8 USM, which ranges between $800 to $900 depending on which shop. Just hope I don't go for any travel trips soon and I will be quite tied up anyway for the upcoming months with the super yoyo campaign, macenrich, wan, dow, foxy, etc, etc. Not in a hurry so the lens can wait. I will probably get more anxious if I really decide to try underwater photography. Have emailed a retailer today for an ikelite underwater housing setup for my 450d. From google, it is estimated at 4k sgd and I hope I was looking at the wrong prices!!
This post makes me feel like a tech geek.

Can I say no?
"Ed ask if you guys are free to go for dinner tonight. He has a batch
of wagyu for us to sample..........."
Ed is my friend who is the sous chef of a restaurant at Duxton.
Sadly, I have so much things going on today that I can't be sure if I
can make it for the sampling later but I like the idea of being in a
Wagyu Sampling Team.

OG Air Jordan 1
was selling an individual pair, originally came in the "beginning
moments" pack with another pair of the yellow/black colourway.
Don't think I will get to wear it often since I need to wear my work
shoes quite frequently now.
What else is left on my wishlist? I am quite sure this pair jordans
are the last item on my wish list and I admit that it is a "want" more than a
need. Once in a while I would search online for someone selling it.
Ebay has tonnes but 90% of them are fakes.
It is a childhood thing to get it. What a convenient excuse.

Wished all my patients were like you
am feeling all good now and have resumed all my daily activities,
jogging, etc and just went diving over the weekend. She asked me to
wait while she took a pen and paper to get details about the dive
trip. She is not local and I am quite sure she is a diver as well.
After the checkups, went through some exercise routines with me. I
seem perfectly fine, she was happy with my improvement and said that
she can discharge me today!!! That was really great news for me.
Some additional points from her, she told me to wear my weight belts
lower around the hip area instead of the waist. Don't think that is
much of a problem since I can already descent with 2 weights. I think
I can try going down with one next time and I will just attach it to
the strap of my BC.
Lastly, the exercises she taught were to help strengthen my abdominal
core muscles. I asked her about what about other ab exercises like
crunches and stuff. My understanding from her is that the 6 packs is
really kinda for aesthetics only. Someone with well defined 6 pack may
have weak core muscles. That is LPPL. Spend so much effort and time to
pump those packs up but can't help support the spine or body posture.
That was an interesting fact to know.
MJ Tribute at Zirca
close to my home. Then Jan smsed me to go check out the MJ tribute at
Zirca. I don't feel well and needed a drink so I headed down. The
queue outside was freakin long and if I had to join the queue, I think
I will probably head elsewhere for ice cream instead. Through some
guy, we managed to get the chop and cut the queue. It has always been
like that when I follow them to clubbing events and isn't it ironic? I
am the most of place person in a club but somehow I get to cut queue
and go in for free (still have to pay for drinks of course).
There were band performances of MJ's songs, many MJ impersonators,
MJ's music videos, some media celebrities, etc. I kinda enjoyed the
music videos, haven't seen them for a while. The MJ wannabes put up
great shows too. Half way, we went up to the members lounge. I suppose
that area is supposed to be exclusive? The setting especially with all
the caucasians and all reminded me of a movie set from a vampire movie.

The crying toddler
post this before I forget about this incident. We arrived at Mersing
at about 12.30am. Checked into a budget hotel which was pre arranged.
We are just there for a few hours before taking the first ferry. When
I first entered the room and saw the bed, I was actually quite afraid
of it! I have been very used to my floor and my previous beds have
caused me enough pain and trouble. Sounds silly but that was how I
felt. I did consider sleeping on the floor but this hotel was quite
cha chut.. It was only 3 stories high and there is no lift, shop house
kind.
Went for supper (prata) and back to bed. I shared the room with Adrian
(also a programmer from NTU sports camp), he was fast asleep but I was
worrying about the bed. The last thing I want is to wake up with a
strained back the next morning and they will completely screw up my
entire weekend of dives.
After a while I heard the tap started to trickle water then it got
more. I didn't bother to check the toilet because I assumed it was
just expansion of pipes and concrete. Next, I thought a heard a
toddler crying. Then it got louder and there was no doubt that someone
was crying. I guess I was supposed to be start feeling scared at this
point but I surprised myself that I am not. Seriously, I am more
afraid of my bed giving me a bad back the next morning!
The next morning, Adrian told me he heard the cry too but our friends
in 3 other rooms on the same floor did not hear it. They were probably
fast asleep because they did not join us for supper. Only Roy who
stays alone in one of the rooms went with us but he did not hear the
cry either.
We were kind of joking about it throughout the weekend, trying to find
logical explanations of the cry. I refused to believe it is casper but
we can't find any much supporting theories. Firstly, that hotel was
rundown enough for a family to wanna check in, unless they are
fugitives or something.
Then why did the cry get louder progressively? Adrian's theory was
that a family checked in late and was walking on their way up. Sounds
logical at first but I would then expect them to enter the room after
coming up. The cry got loud and stayed at that level for quite a
while. Long enough for me to just forget about my bed and fall asleep.
We thought that it sounded a little like the cry was coming from the
next level. We were on the 3rd floor, on our way to check out the next
morning, I saw a metal gate with a lock at the stairs leading to the
4th floor.
We saw a family with a young caucasian boy with his family at the
jetty and maybe they were in the same hotel as us? Most of us agreed
that they wouldn't check into that hotel and anyway, that boy is too
old for that kind of cry, which sounds more from a toddler.
Thats the start. We were hoping to hear the cry in our resort at
Tioman. Too much compressed air knocked us out quite early the next
night and we didn't hear any more cries.
The next time I hear something like that, I have to get out of the
room to find out the source. That will be a new adventure on its own
besides exploring the underwater world. Will blog more about the dives
next. It is way past my bed time.
